Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy. Add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients and knead until a smooth dough forms. Cover the dough and let it rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  2. While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. In a skillet, cook the ground pork over medium heat until browned. Add the chopped mushrooms and onions, and cook until they are softened. Season with soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small portions (about 8-10 pieces). Roll each portion into a ball and flatten it into a small circle.
  4. Place a spoonful of the pork filling in the center of each dough circle. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch them together to seal the filling inside, forming a bun shape.
  5. Place the filled buns on parchment paper or a lightly greased steamer basket. Let them rest for about 15 minutes to rise slightly.
  6. Steam the buns over boiling water for about 15-20 minutes or until they are cooked through and fluffy.
  7. Remove from the steamer and let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your homemade Bánh Bao!
