Comfort food
Steamed buns
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water and sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture to the flour, mixing until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small portions (about 8-10 pieces). Roll each portion into a ball and flatten it slightly.
- Place a small amount of filling (if desired) in the center of each dough piece and pinch the edges together to seal it. You can use sweet or savory fillings based on your preference.
- Place the buns on parchment paper squares and let them rest for about 15 minutes to rise slightly.
- Steam the buns in a steamer for about 15-20 minutes until they are cooked through and fluffy.
